About

My name is Mike Serfis and I am the sole artist working out of the Serfis Clay Studio.  After over four decades working in clay, from manufacturing ceramic equipment to production throwing, I am returning to my studio roots.  My latest project is to push my boundaries of artist expression through a series of work that is allowed to grow organically.

I am using thrown vessel forms as a stretched canvas, limiting myself to only black lines, the color of the clay and a single background color to develop the composition.  A series of lines are used to define objects or to create intricate patterns or textures.  The surface of the forms becomes the focal point of interest, sometimes conforming to the shape of the form and sometimes contradicting it.

Working on each piece is time consuming, requiring concentration and attention to small detail.  The visual interest changes with each step.  The success of a piece cannot be judged until it is fired and displayed.  By offering this work to the public I can continue to invest time and resources in this project and the work can be seen and enjoyed by others.
